Trusted Conversations: Insights from a Whistleblower
by: Scott McLintock
CurbyMcLintock Partner, Scott McLintock, had the pleasure of speaking with Sylvain Mansotte who in 2012, while working at Leighton Contractors, ‘blew the whistle’ on a $20 million fraud (Click on the link here to view the interview with Sylvain).
Sylvain, identifying a gap in the market and drawing on his experiences as a whistleblower, went on to develop his own whistleblower platform, Whispli.
Whispli is focused on maximising the user experience and providing a mechanism for organisations to help foster a speak-up culture based on his philosophy of being able to have ‘trusted conversations’.
Whispli is now used around the globe by government and private sector organisations as their preferred whistleblowing platform.
Our conversation with Sylvain provides a unique insight into the dilemmas ‘whistleblowers’ face when grappling with information that may end careers or send someone to jail, and where the discloser is on the precipice of making a decision to speak up or not and factors that may contribute to that decision.
Sylvain also provides insights into how organisations can build trust and better handle complaints in their ‘speak up’ program not only as a way of identifying misconduct but as a way of engaging with staff to keep a finger on the pulse of the health and wellbeing of staff and the organisation.
If you want to get some tips on how to engender trust in your whistleblower program and unlock the potential of having trusted conversations with your staff, then this is the session for you.

WHO IS CURBYMCLINTOCK?
‘Because fraud happens’, you can’t afford to ignore it. A fraud can have a significant impact on an organisation beyond losses suffered directly from the fraud. There are also the costs associated with investigating, litigating, regulatory ramifications, public relations, staff management and the time required managing the fallout from a fraud.
A proactive approach is a sensible and cost-effective method to prevent fraud occurring in the first instance. We typically find that organisations rely on standard controls supported by policy and procedures as the only line of defence against fraud. This is simply not enough, and your stakeholders and regulators expect you to take a more robust, proactive approach to protecting your organisation from financial loss and other associated risks.
CurbyMcLintock can assist you become fraud resilient by adopting a methodology which combines skilled interviewing techniques and tapping into the knowledge of your staff who are at the coalface of business operations, to help uncover where your organisation is exposed to internal and external fraud. We will then provide you with mitigation strategies to reduce the risk of a fraud incident occurring
